Sneak Attack On Pearl Harbor
Day of Infamy
December, 1941 – January, 1942
Heard in Danny’s
“The sneaky Jap bastards! - No warning! Why didn't they fight like men?”
“My uncle is at Pearl Harbor – No one’s heard any news. He’s on the Arizona. No news – no nothing.” -
Richie Quinn – “Out of my way! I’m joining the Marines – the Best!” Semper Fi! (Note: He flunked the physical – too small. Therefore, a few years later, he enlisted in the Army paratroopers.)
Blackie Hession and Joe Scarletta
Joe: “Let’s join the Army – you get a warm bunk and three squares a day.”
Blackie: “No let’s join the Marines.”
“I can’t swim - I almost drowned twice at Malibu Beach. Let’s do it quickly before people start dumping on me over my folks being German immigrants!”
Joe: “What about the Italian heritage? Same deal, but I’d like the Army. So let’s lip a coin.”
Blackie suggested, “Heads it’s Army and tails it’s Marines.”
“Right on,” said Joe.
They flip a coin – all the boys are cheering. “It’s heads! The Army!”
Booker
“Bill, they don’t know what’s in store for them. But it’s a fine thing they do. Defend your country. But you know – I want to go so bad, I can taste it. But my doctor says ‘no’ and my bones tell me that he’s right.”
Bill Morrissey – “I enlisted in the British Navy – I’m from Newfoundland.”
Chico – left a few years ago or the Spanish Civil War – no word concerning his whereabouts.
Casey – “With my record, they don’t want me – screw em.”
Gunny – “My heart is there but my body says “no.”
Daughter: “It’s my duty – if I can, I want to enlist in the Marines.”
Mother: My God, dear – join the service – are you insane?”
Sign in St. Peter’s Church – “For God and For Country”
Sign outside First National – “God Bless America”
Police Station 11 – Iron Mike is too old – disappointed
Army Base – A line a mile long – mostly young kids – all excited about the great time
