Japan Surrenders
World War II is over
August, 1945
It was officially announced – Japan surrendered, unconditionally.
Booker: “Bill, set up the house – all day! When the boys can’t stand, then shut them off. Only local guys are welcomed. If Charlestown or the Southie boys get word of this offer, they’ll move down Bowdoin Street like a swarm of locusts chomping through the bounty. The bar would be dry within an hour.” Obviously, Booker was a little high, probably from the total excitement, pride and happiness. He drank very little as a rule but today was very special. He clinked his glass with me, and said, “We beat the bastards – the Krauts and the Japs!”
