After the Discharge
Then what?
1953
Korean Vet, Rick Smith – recently discharged and two old timers: (Bob McNamara, School Teacher, and Ira Gold, Attorney)
Bob asks, “Well Smitty, now that you’re ready for discharge, what are your plans?”
“I dunno, get a job I guess.”
Bob suggests, “Go to college, young man. It’s the best investment that you’ll ever make. Shoot for the moon. Take one of those interest surveys and aptitude tests. Determine your strengths and interests. Then find a college or voke school that can prepare you. Get as much useful education that you can afford. The world will be your oyster.”
Ira God suggests, “Get a government job and take night classes. The old timers in Danny’s – especially the survirors of the depression have always preached public sector jobs – Teachers, Fireman, Police, Civil Service psotions. Go or the pensions, boys.”
Bob, “You were in Korea – and were wounded – you know that being a disabled vet really helps. The Civil Service gives considerable benefits to DAV’s.”
“They gotta take a disabled vet over the others,” says Ira. “For heaven’s sake – you top the fireman exam or police exam. And if you get sick as a public employee – you take your body to a V.A. hospital and tell them – here fix me up. That’s an exaggeration but not by much. And you can get a pension with the state, it may not pay the best but it’s secure.”
Ira concludes, “Public employment has defects but overall, the benefits outweigh them. Certainly civil service is worth consideration.”
